It has been too long since I've posted anything and there is just too much to play catch-up. In a nutshell, the kids have been completing independent studies each day (M-F). Our "independent studies" include vocabulary (writing the words over and over, looking up and writing the definitions, word search and/or crossword puzzles using their vocabulary words), spanish (writing the words over and over, and writing the definitions), reading (our books are selected from a book list for their grade level obtained via internet and the children are expected to read at least one chapter and then journalize after each chapter). Once I get home from work we review and discuss their independent work, and then move on into our Math, English, History, and spiritual studies. Both Wolfie and Drew are showing great progess in their multiplications. Both are working somewhat elementary math with Drew working on long addition, subtraction, and short multiplication, and Wolfie working into the long multiplication and division (he will begin some pre-algebra shortly). Working our way through our English textbook together, both children are focusing on learning to recognize parts of the sentence, puncuation, types of sentences, etc. For History, we watch movies based on historical events and/or documentaries, as well reading together in our History textbook, stopping now and then for discussions, questions, and explanations. Thereafter, we journalize about the movie or chapter information.

We took almost the entire month of December off as our family shared a cold or flu bug and then the holidays hit, but we have survived it all. So, I for one (at least), am looking forward to the new year and getting a rejuvinated start back at homeschooling.

positive feedback from the authorities

My children told me yesterday that I was a good teacher....

As stated in a prior post, I had the kids look-up and write the definitions to their vocabulary words. As you know, Drew had some trouble and it became apparent to me that she needs lessons on how the dictionary is put together and using it, so we worked on that together. Wolfie had found his words and written the definitions but I didn't look over them initially. So yesterday, when they were writing sentences for each word, he came to me first with each word to discuss it first, and each time his definition was way off and we would look-up the word again together and discuss how he came to have his definition rather than the one in the dictionary or thesaurus. So now I see that Wolfie is going to require just a tad more help than I realized in regards to using a dictionary and/or thesaurus. Part of me is thinking, Wolfie is thirteen, he should know by now how to use a dictionary, and is this another "epic fail" coming to light on the part of our local ISD. But, it's okay, it's cool, we are learning where the kids need to start and what to cover, so it's still all good, and it's comforting to me to witness what they are Their assignments were to (1) look up and write the definitions to each of their vocabulary words, (2) write their Spanish words ten times each and say the word aloud each time they write it, (3) watch the new history dvd (dinosaurs in the Ice Age) and then journalize about it. They did pretty good. Drew also needed some help doing her definitions, and they both still needed to watch the history dvd. In their defense, they were adjusting to a different schedule as I had put them to bed earlier and then they woke earlier, but maybe still a little too early - they fell asleep when they tried to watch it (both times).

I got off of work by 5p, and met the kids with dad at the library. They were all a little lost as things had been rearranged since our last visit. I had my list of suggested reading and we found our way to the "card catalog" which, by the way, no longer consists of actual cards. We were there maybe an hour and had found 4-5 books each, then head out for a family dinner. By the time we got home they were both halfway through their first books. Drew was reading Lulu and the Brontosaurus, and Wolfie had started with his pick Diary of a Stinky Dead Kid (don't ask, at least he's reading). They journaled about their books, we even made a video of them critiquing their book, and I would share with you but the lighting and audio turned out really poor. Maybe after we've all got some practice under our belts, then I'll upload some videos. They picked out their next books and Wolfie chose Lord of the Flies (better), and Drew chose Only Emma.

Wolfie worked 25 math problems, all simple adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers. He did fabulous and his only mistakes were one issue with handwriting, his 2 looked like a 7 and he worked the problem that way. His second issue was close to the end, he wrote the problem correctly but simply subtracted rather than adding. Today, I'd like to see him work more math problems independently, only moving on to multiplication and division (he hates those, especially division). While Wolfie worked on his math, Drew and I worked together on her vocabulary definitions. We have a wonderful, and simple, dictionary that is perfect for her, but she needed more instruction on how to use it.

We touched on a little art with some photography, their picks for pics below:

(Wolfie's photo below)
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; By the end of the week Drew and Wolfie were impressing me with all of the information they had retained about our history topic, and of course, had picked out several favorite dinosaurs and facts about them. They were each given notebooks and we talked about journaling and what I expect. In short, they are expected to put their name, date, and title at the top of the page (this, simply, because I feel it's important that they have plenty of practice and are comfortable signing their name, and because it is important that they are aware of the current date which is easy to loose track of when you are not thinking about it everyday). Both Wolfie and Drew are very creative and I am encouraging them to show their creativity in their journals. I feel that if they are allowed the freedom to express themselves in a way they are comfortable, it will encourage information retention; it will also encourage a freedom to express themselves without feeling limited by someone else's expectations (such as, what I have personally witnessed, our school system does in many facets - their motto maybe(?), "Never cease to seize an opportunity to quash the dreams and independence of our youth" ....oh. Sorry.... got a little sidetracked).

Yesterday was Sunday, but I was in the mood, so we did a little homeschooling. One of the perks to homeschooling is the flexible schedule (and if I'm too sick to work one day out of the week, I won't be spending that time stressing about the kids falling behind or having to race through their assignments just to catch-up). Initially, they did moan (again) at the idea of doing "homework" which after we discussed it, I came to realize the word "homework" had become a "bad word". So maybe we'll come up with another word to call it, but until then - it is what it is.

We began with English, both working from the same book, which I believe is considered to be a 4th grade book. I am comfortable choosing this level because I felt it contain a lot of basic information that Drew will is ready to learn as she enters what would have been her 4th grade level, and Wolfie, who struggles a bit more with this subject, will benefit from the refresher course. This, of course, also makes things easier for me as we can sit and discuss the information together and at the same time, without the stress of jumping between two separate grade levels (and from the looks of it so far, the competition between the two of them may help them try harder and retain more). On this day, we kept it short and sweet, starting with Chapter One and touching only on sentence fragments and complete sentences and how to recognize the difference between them. Sounds simple enough. We also discussed when during our day that we might hear a sentence fragment and our reaction to it. After reading and discussion, I read aloud some examples and they identified each sentence privately in their journal as fragment or complete. Out of approximately 10 sentences, Drew (age 9) got only one wrong, and Wolfie (age 13) got about two or three. Shocking? But statistics have showed that boys tend to struggle in English and do well in Math, and girls, of course, tend to do the opposite. So, cest la vie. We finished up our English work and both of the children said they felt they had learned something, it was not as painful as they expected and actually quite fun. I did not take grades and do not plan, at this time, to track grades - so they don't have to worry about that pressure for now.

We moved on to Vocabulary. Wolfie (8th grade) and Drew (4th grade) have different words that were pulled from lists for their approximate grade levels. I went over the word lists separately with each of the children and discussed whether or not they were familiar with some of the words, the pronunciation, definitions, and the importance of vocabulary and being comfortable using the words you hear and use on a day to day basis. On this day, they simply wrote each word 20 times in their journal. Wolfie's words are: apathy, beseech, blatant, capricious, covet, despondent, docile, flabbergast, irate, loath, melancholy, notorious, pique, unscathed, and vindictive. Drew's words are: accuse, ambition, brief, confess, delicate, frail, grasp, habit, intend, ordeal, predict, revive, solution, theory, and wit.

And finally, we touched on our Spanish. We started with numbers one through five and we'll add five numbers to the mix until we reach 30. From there we will move on to some individual words and short common phrases. Drew had to show off as she is already well versed in her numbers through ten. (I remember Drew, about one year old, still in diapers and counting her blocks in Spanish as she stacked them. As soon as I got the video recorder out, she'd stop - ugh.) I'm not sure how far will continue with our Spanish lessons as it will depend on our progress and interest level, but I suspect they may go "all the way" - I can only hope. We also discussed the importance of being bilingual and knowing Spanish. I think if we venture into some Mexican history and traditions, it would encourage them to embrace their own heritage and be loads of FUN too. (BTW, my babies are a mix - daddy is Mexican and momma is German/Swiss and Irish/Indian.)

We concluded with a discussion about what I will be expecting from them, and their independent studies. They were both excited at the comfort level of todays lessons, as well as the quality time we got to spend together. Both declared Spanish had been their favorite part of the day.

This type of learning is going to be a lifestyle change as I intend to simply continue our lessons throughout a complete year and any time of day. The opportunity to learn can present itself at any time, the trick is to recognize it, seize it and respect it. I suppose our schedule will be somewhat flexible, but I do feel it's VERY important the children have a routine they can count on, so the plan is to still as close as possible to a structured schedule. I believe routine encourages stability, comfort, self-discipline, and so on. I am tracking our work on my day planner and hopefully will be fairly consistent with this blog too.

Today we are going on a "field trip" to our local public library to pick out some reading books. I've pulled titles from several online sources. I know which books I would like to see them read, but I don't believe I will commit until I've looked at them myself. I don't want to burn the kids out by forcing a book that they simply aren't interested in or struggling to understand. So, I'll just let you know what we are reading as we go along. I have decided they will journal on these books as well because I don't want them to simply read the book mindlessly. I want them to delve into it and learn to pull out the often obscure messages that can be incorporated into a book.

On another note, I saw one of my aunts this weekend. In a moment of privacy she, somewhat blatantly declared, "you are going to screw up those kids" and went on to say, "you're their mom so I guess you can do that." Now, lots of things to take into consideration with this situation. First, you got to know that she is a teacher, has been most of her adult life, and is currently in the field part-time I believe. It's her life. But she also comes from the point of view of a family member who simply loves us, cares for us, and worries for us. She noted that I am still employed full-time and I have a lot on my plate as it is, and she noted that this is our second year of homeschooling and our first year of doing so without a specific program. Then, I noted, to myself, that I really haven't spent alot of time discussing the matter, our intentions, goals, and plan of actions with her either. What could have been perceived as rudeness, took me by surprise, so I really didn't respond much to her accusation. After sitting on it for a while, I consider that, frankly, homeschoolers would be (uhh) somewhat delusional (is that the right word?) if they entered the world of homeschooling without acknowledging that eventually they would be faced with this sort of (uhm) judgment or opinion. I just feel, I kind of "get" where she's coming from. I mean, obviously, I've had time to entertain this idea of homeschooling and adapt to this way of educating my children. It wasn't an easy decision for me. I grew up in the public school system. But I also think I've watched it transform into something I'm not so keen with in many, many ways. Homeschooling, initially, was outside my comfort zone. I read, researched, worried, and talked about it for at least 3-4 years before actually taking the leap. And still, I babystepped into homeschooling, beginning with an online public school organization (Connections Academy) before beginning this years more eclectic-esque homeschooling. As a I have homeschooled, I have learned so much, right along side my children, and homeschooling is certainly not for everyone; the kids have to be somewhat self-disciplined, as does the parent. Both have to respect the plan and be concerned enough about the childs educational background to put the necessary effort into it. And a healthy respect between parent and child certainly eases the situation. Today more and more families are opting to homeschool. There is so much information available and support groups are everywhere. I love my aunt and appreciate all of her concern, regardless of how it's expressed. I want her, along with all of my other family members and friends, to be proud and impressed of me and my children. I look forward to that day (and it WILL come) when she can turn to me and say, "well, you surprised me, I was skeptical but you all seem to be doing really good." (LOL) I can hear her now following that up with something like "but they could've got that in the public school system too" - but no matter, I will have already stopped listening (hehe). (=

I want to share this link with you. It's the Facebook page for The Old Schoolhouse Magazine and it's packed with homeschool support and information.

rogue education

I have learned alot this year from "homeschooling" with Connections Academy. The program was a God-send when we needed it. I have come to realize though, that although it is a fabulous program, there are still key requirements I feel are not being met in the education of our children. Specifically, in educating through CA we are still with a public school and public schools must follow states guidelines for education; guidelines which are based on a fictitious middle-of-the-road child who learns specific skills at specific times. I feel the current public school curriculums push the children through their lessons without providing the opportunity to master each lesson. I feel the school districts have prioritized only those aspects that directly effect the assurance of their funding, rather than assurance of a well-rounded education (which is individualized). While I value and appreciate the teacher, and believe teaching is only becoming more difficult, more underappreciated, and more underpaid, they too, are subject to the politics of the state's requirements as well, and consequently, limited by same. I have seen teachers hand out extra credit "work" with the intention that it would pass children along into the next grade level, rather than holding them accountable for their progress. God forbid we hold back too many children - but we "fail" them still. I was in a comfort zone with the only system of education I was familiar with, but it had become a Catch-22.

I agonized about pulling my children from public schooling. I worried about the extra work load I would have and fullfilling the responsibility (but whether they are in public school, private school, or homeschooled, I still bore that responsiblity). I worried that I might do them an injustice by pulling them out of public school, but continued to feel the injustice of leaving them in public school. I could either sit by and watch them struggle, stress, and fret over their assignments and passing each grade level, or I could step up and make sure they were provided the education I felt would be most beneficial (and the education they deserved). Yes, it would be more on my plate, but I had the kids in the first place. It's my duty as a parent, and simply, I am going to follow through for them. Anyhow, no one knows it all, not even the teachers. Fact is, many schools assign teachers to lead classes on subjects they were never trained to teach. A homeschooling parent learns along side the child, and a home education is all about meeting the child's individual educational needs.

So here's our new plan. Are you sitting down? We'll be homeschooling, by its, uh, truer form, and I never, I mean NEVER, thought I would be homeschooling any of my children, ever! This year we rushed our way through the textbooks in an online public school, which became a baby step towards an actual homeschooling program. Now, we will work our way through the textbooks at a slower pace. We will work year around, and allow the children to master each lesson before moving on. I have already purchased the books off of ebay for about $10-15.00 each, beginning with a repeat of this years textbooks.

She said, She said

The following are excerpts from correspondence between myself and the teachers regarding my math curriculum concerns.

Excerpts from my letter to Drew's teacher:
"Although we were given a little more time to spend on previous lessons, and I continue to give extra work myself in math; I am still very unhappy with the current curriculum." "...I do not feel the kids are retaining the information in math - they are not mastering the lessons before moving on; and I feel they are covering lessons that could wait. Drew's grades do not reflect her actual scores because I go over the incorrect answers with her, explain them to her, and then correct the answer before submitting the assessments. Both children are capable of understanding the information being given to them in order to complete the daily assignments, they simply aren't holding on to that information for long because they seem to be moving to(sic) fast."

"As for Drew, I feel she needs much, much more time spent on 3 digit adding and subtracting (borrowing and carrying over), and small multiplication and division (as well as money and time). I feel these are foundational to all other math and it's really important for her to actually master it before moving on. Otherwise, she will be overwhelmed, struggle just to keep up, and not retain the information for later."

"The most important lessons, in my opinion, are foundational math (adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, and simple algebra), and reading and grammar. If they can master these, they will have better problem solving skills in the long run."

Excerpts from (Drew's) teacher's response:
"I agree completely with you that a great foundation in math is of the utmost importance. CA math curriculum does introduce many skills without a lot of time for mastery. I'm a firm believer in repetition to learn the basic math facts."

"I appreciate you sharing that Drew is not as strong a math student as her math grades reflect. Drew really needs to complete the assessments independently so that I can have a better grasp of what her strengths and weaknesses are. Had she been doing this and we were getting a truer picture of her math skills, then she could have been put on an escalation plan. This would allow me the possiblity of modifying and/or deleting some assignments so we could just focus on the basics."

"On future math assessments, I would like for you to not correct Drew's mistakes and let me see what she is understanding. After I grade the assessments, Drew could then go back and rework the incorrect questions. If Drew does complete the assessments independently and does not make a passing grade I will then readjust her grade to 70%, if she corrects the missed questions. She will need to show her work, how she arrived at her answer and webmail this to me. (make sure to include the unit/lesson)"

(Let me just say here, that as the parent and the "learning coach", I feel I'm in a pretty good position to determine how my child is doing as well as the lessons my child needs more attention with. I also feel, in an online program such as CA, the teachers would take that into consideration and, consequently, my opinion and concerns would carry more weight, and that weight would allow us to cut straight into action as opposed to this process of submitting incorrect answers in order to verify what I am already expressing. I do not want to appear to harsh on CA, as I have enjoyed it so much, and I do realize they are a public school entity and must conform to the same rules and procedures (which may not be what I am looking for in a homeschooling program, rumor has it I am the controlling sort) ;) I do feel I have a fairly accurate understanding of how my children learn, think, and feel; education is an emotional process as well. So, I've pulled my children from our local public schools not only because they have been undergoing dramatic changes in the last two years that I did not agree with nor feel comfortable with, but also because I could see so many children in the public school system losing their power, losing the passion, and losing respect. I didn't want my children to be lost as well. I want them taught in an environment that nutures a healthy self-esteem, encourages their passions, enthusiasm, and love. Okay, okay, I've started rambling and I, in no way, mean to imply that CA is anything nearly resembling my local ISD, so let's move on.)

Excerpt from my letter to Wolfie's teacher:
"I still feel that Wolfie is moving forward in Math way too fast, and he is not given the time to master the lesson before moving on. While he seems to do well with watching a live or recorded lesson, reading the book, watching videos, and understanding the assignment, he is not retaining the information. (I believe his TAKS is going to reflect this as well.)"

"I am extremely confused as to why Wolfie is already studying Geometry, when his focus, I feel, should be long division and multiplication, and simple algebra. I have noticed he struggles in these areas and I feel it's because he wasn't given the time to master it enough to feel good about it, and then move forward. In my opinion, the most important lessons are the foundational math (adding, subtracting, multiplication, divsion, and simple algebra), and reading, writing, and grammar. If they can master these, they will have better problem solving skills in everything else in their lives."

Excerpt from (Wolfie's) teacher's response:
"I've actually already modified the math 7 curriculum by skipping everything in part B that is not required by the state of Texas. My plan is to have students work on that material during the last month of school, because those lessons are foundation topics for next year."

"Though it may feel frustrating that Wolfie is studying Geometry instead of focusing more on basic math skills, our state requires studying in Geometry, Algebra, Data and Statistics, etc. each year. I can make curriculum modifications, but I cannot omit topics that are required in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS)."

"However, it may make more senese for Wolfie if we spend the last month going back and continuing to practice the essential skills from Math 7, instead of having him work on the skipped topics. That will give him a full month to reflect and review."

Consequently, I am looking into more homeschooling options. I don't view this as a set back nor a wrong decision; this is all, simply, a learning experience (and I suppose one would be very lucky to find just that right one, on the first try). I also understand, there will be pros and cons to every situation, but I also feel the gravity of my expectations for my child's learning experience. I have sat and watched my children working hard only at keeping up, and never really being allowed the time to "get it" and get excited about "getting it". What then am I looking for in our educational experience? A "program" that allows the children to (1) work at a pace I feel is comfortable and reasonable for them, (2) with a focus on mastering each lesson before moving forward, (3) offers a adequate and well devised curriculum, and (4) affordablity.

I start my search with the following: Sonlight, Winter Promise, Alpha Omega, The Pioneer Woman, A Beka, K12, and North Texas Academy, and I will post more links to more programs as I come across them.

To leave or not to leave, that is the question!

I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while, but with the holidays and the way my new year began, I simply haven't had the time (and those who know me personally, understand).

Lately, I've been questioning whether or not Connections Academy is the right program for us. As previously posted, I had touched base with a couple of our teachers to revise the lesson plans for Drew and Wolfie so that they could spend more time on certain math lessons. While the teachers worked with me, I still feel the children continue to move forward on the subject of math faster than necessary. I would rather see them truly master the basic foundation lessons of math and retain that information, than have them move forward into areas quickly, covering plenty of ground but not remembering any of it later.

Consequently, I have been entertaining other homeschooling programs. I have a family member that was homeschooled and continues the tradition with her son; she has given me lots of information and support (I am truly thankful).

But for math, I am really happy with the program and the childrens progress in all other subjects. I could do without some of the ridiculous "trick" questions snuck in here and there. I believe those only promote self-doubt and insecurities; although I understand they may encourage a student to pay more attention to detail, it can be saved for late-middle and high school grades (elementary is just too young for those "games"). Connection Academy's teachers have been amazing! The program itself, is easy to use for everyone. The curriculum and grading system is fine. Therefore, leaving Connections would not be a decision made lightly.

(p.s. I do not, however, have any regrets whatsoever about pulling the children from our local public schools.)

New plan of action (Math)

Heard back from Drew's teacher regarding the information I submitted in the previous post. She too has revised Drew's schedule so that we can slow her down in Math.

Consequently, I am currently rerunning the scheduler every morning so that the Math assignments do not show overdue. Instead, we are working out of our workbooks or creating our own worksheets for the kids to refresh what they have already worked through.

I have backed-up Wolfie (7th grader) to refresh some of his basic multiplication and division until he is comfortable (maybe a few more days of this), and then will move forward into some of the algebraic mathematics we had touched on in the beginning of this year.

As for Drew (3rd grader), we have reverted back into adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers as well as multiplication of one-digit numbers. She did very well last night, and again I believe a few more days of this, and they will feel they have mastered these processes.

I don't know how much time was actually "bought" when our teachers revised our schedules, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for now, and staying focused on our current plan of action.

Although Thanksgiving holidays are just around the corner, I'll probably be the "mean" parent and have the children continue to work several of those days off, just to keep them focused as well as an attempt to get them caught up in a more timely manner. No matter, they'll still have plenty of time off.

Happy holidays!

Letter to the teacher

In my previous post, I expressed a concern I had over the kids moving too quickly through their Math assignments. Since, I sent the following letter to Wolfie's teacher and another similar in content to Drew's teacher.

"Wolfie is struggling with the recent Math quiz. I wanted to express my concerns (which not only apply to Wolfie but also my 3rd grader). You're just the "lucky" teacher I decided to poe it too, and hopefully you can provide some direction for us.

As Wolfie (and I) worked through the last few lessons, he did really well. He seemed to grasp everything quite well. Although, it is my opinion, he is moving through the lessons too quickly (each one introduces something new) and he doesn't have time to just stay with one lesson for a day or two longer to let it really sink in and allow him to be comfortable moving to the next lesson (comfort is important, I think), and this is causing a problem then later when he needs to recollect the processes. (My 3rd grader is having the same problem. She ends up in tears because she gets so overwhelmed.)

I'd really like to see them slow down. I mean, at this rate, they'll be doing calculus by 9th grade. *chuckling* I reeeeally don't think that's a good idea for them though. We could end with just a complete knowledge of all things algebraic and I think they'll still be doing really good (I did).

I know there is no deadline to turn in assignments, but there is a deadline to complete a course and we've had to double-up on math (for both students) in order to reach that goal. It's just SO not working for us. I got so frustrated and fussed at Wolfie last night (made him cry) because he couldn't recall what he had learned for the math test - and I know, it's not his fault. He just needs to back-up and do those lessons over again and dwell on them for a day or two before moving on.

Any help? Any suggestions please?

Much appreciation!
Karen"

It wasn't long after sending this email that our teacher responded with a call to me. She made several suggestions and modifications to Wolfie's schedule which, hopefully, will allow him to spend more time absorbing the lessons before moving on. She was absolutely wonderful and expressed a sincere appreciation for my communication as well.

Relieved as I keep my fingers crossed now.

(I have not yet heard back from Drew's teacher, but I'm sure I will tomorrow.)

As for today's work, they both completed their priorities pretty timely. Wolfie worked some math problems from his workbook for previous lessons, rather than the scheduled assignment today. We are literally going to go back over previous lessons so that he can refresh.

School work, school work, & more school work

WOW! The workload is much bigger than I expected. It seems lately, that as soon as we think we've got a good flow of things, something else is added to the list. The kids easily spend 8+ hours a day on schoolwork. We finally get into the flow of the daily class schedules, and then we have live lessons for each of the classes to fit in (each of these last 30 minutes). While attending every live lesson is not a requirement, I do like to see the kids attend as several a week. Then there is the AskAMI live lessons, which is a math tutorial. It's a wonderful tutorial, but lower on our priority list because of all the other demands. Now we have TAKS live lessons as well, these are higher on the priority, because they are meant to help the kids with that test.

I'm a little disappointed too, that we seem to be pushing the kids along in the some of the courses for fear of getting too far behind. While most of the time, there are not (immediate) deadlines to turn in work, there is a deadline for completing each course. I am the sort that likes to stay on top of things, stay the course, and I put a lot of pressure on myself (and the kids) when I think we may fall behind. If we do not get all the work complete on the day it is assigned, not only is there the overdue lesson notice blasting at me from the front page, but we also must fear the smiley face transforming into the ever dreaded frowning face. Ugh!

Specifically, math seems to forge on with new lessons, when I would prefer to see both of the kids spending more time soaking up some of the other math lessons. For example, Drew has moved on to math lessons envolving multiplying 3 numbers (4x7x5=), while I would prefer to see her spend more time on adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers (369-137=) and basic multiplications (4x3= & 12x3=). I just think she needs to dwell on these areas a bit longer until her esteem is comfortable enough with it and then move forward. She tends to get discouraged and upset easily if she is overwhelmed, and Wolfie faces the same dilemma as well.

Note to self: contact the teachers about my concerns.

Electing Electives

The kids are moving along in their studies nicely. Grades are fine. Still, I feel a little pushed forward too quickly. At times, I would like to just pause for a while longer in certain areas that I feel the kids need more time to grasp, but I worry about getting too far behind on the classes as a result (the classes have completion deadlines). We have had to double up on Math on Mondays for both of the children so that they can complete it by the due date. As it is, we spend anywhere from 6 to 8 hours a day on schooling. We had try to rearrange so that the kids (and parents) had Thursdays and Fridays off from school and worked the weekend. Our motivation for that was due to our work schedules. We felt that it would take some of the pressure off at the end of the week and we would have more time on the weekend to dedicate to the studies. Turns out we really prefer to play on our weekends. So we are back on the Monday through Friday routine. I continue to encourage the children to do what they can on their own taking some of the load off of my daily activities. I think it's very important that they learn problem solving skills and are comfortable taking initiative. There is still a lot of progress to be made in this area, but we continue to move in the right direction.

It's October and time to sign up for elective classes if we so desire. While I'd like the kids to be involved in some of the classes and clubs offered, I think it would just be an overload on our schedule that could negativly backfire on their required classes and effect their grades. Maybe next year. In the meantime, I am planning to teach them some of the information I have on photography and photoshopping. They are both completely intrigued by it as well as both extremely artisticly talented children. The plan is to spend about an hour, more or less, on these subjects with each child, individually, on Saturdays and Sundays. Additionally, the hub has expressed an interest in photography and photoshopping as well, so that will probably be another hour, more or less, with him. My weekends are quickly being filled now and I would like to reserve time for my own photography passions.

With my very booked schedule and all the hustle and bustle here and there, one would think I should weigh much less than I do. What's up with that?!

To title or not to title! We are still debating as to whether or not we will sign up for anything just yet. Alternatively, the kids are interested in the photography and photoshopping that I do and I would love to show them, but maybe on our own rather than through the school. We are all still working really hard to keep the pace.

Last Thursday our family took a field trip of sorts. We drove to Fort Benning, Georgia to attend my step-sons graduation from boot camp. It was a long and exhaustive trip, but fun nonetheless. Wish we had more time and money to play though. Needless to say, we're playing catch-up on our school work now.

I've posted just of few of the 800+ photos I took on my flickr.

I continue to work with the kids on their problem solving skills. Hub and I were quite exhausted by the end of the first few weeks; we have tweeked our schedule to accommodate us and now it's working out quite nicely - I think. We work on school Saturday through Wednesday, because it's so much nicer for Hub and I to have Thursday and Friday off.

I am beginning to back off from working too closely with the kids on their work as I want them to be a bit more independent from us. We do require that they allow us to look over there assessments before submitting them.

Wolfie has four or five portfolios and one or two lab projects he's working on. That's a lot! I have to keep reminding myself that he works at his own pace for the most part. I don't want to stress him with too much pressure to turn in work on the date its first scheduled, but I also don't want him to get too far behind.

Drew has two lab projects. The first was to monitor 4 flower plants. (1. Water & Sunlight; 2. No Water & Sunlight; 3. Water & No Sunlight; and 4. No Water & No Sunlight) She aches for the two plants that are dying, and is determined to "bring them back to life" when this lab is over.

Wolfie and I have been working on his math together. After the first week, he's got it! Yesterday he told me, "I love math! It's so much fun!" Helps to understand it. He has been working on adding/subtracting integers and multiplying/dividing integers. Hint: It's all about the "Order of Operations". I actually surprised myself when I understood it too (it's been so long).

Initially Language Arts was Drew's toughest subject, simply because there was so much to it. The work just seemed to go on and on and on. Now though, she is looking forward to it. Again, it helps to understand it and she has positioned herself to work on this subject with less supervision. I love it.

The kids grades are really reflecting their understanding, and the hardest part now has become that they have to do schoolwork at all. Obviously, they would prefer to play their games and watch their favorite movies, etc.

We did have our teachers re-arranged a little due to the over-enrollment issues and some of the children being transfered to National CA, but nothing too dramatic. Administration was so professional and communicative! They could not have handled it better. (Wolfie wasn't transfered.)

For physical education the kids are becoming quite skilled in their yoga positions. Very entertaining to watch them and while I'm trying to get some good pictures of that to share with you, they keep catching me and aren't too keen on the idea of my posting those shots. (Will keep trying though.) I'd really like to purchase a couple of yoga mats too. Right now they are simply on the carpet which works, but, I think, the yoga mats add to the fun atmosphere of doing the yoga in the first place.

Week One

First let me apologize as I have no photo to accompany this post, but still wanted to get in a quick update on how our first week of school went.

The first couple of days went really well, and towards the end of the week we were all fairly exhausted. My wonderful plan of doing more schoolwork throughout the weekend to help get ahead for the following week did not unfold. Ah well, maybe next weekend (because I still think its a good idea, based on our schedules, to work on school during the weekend and then take Thursdays and Fridays off, if possible).

Wolfie is almost a master at this program as well as his workload. He has attended several live sessions now, and his fear of same is gone. Drew still needs quite a bit of attention, but that's okay.

Their favorite subject is (hold on to your seats here, big surprise - can we get a drum roll please?) ART!!! lol

I believe Wednesday and Thursday were pretty tough days for dad (from the sound of it), but Friday was easier and, as I said before, I believe me and the hub have more to learn than the kids. (pray for us)

We received a phone call from Drew's teacher on Thursday. It was only to touch base with us and see if we had any questions. Roy and I spoke with her, and then Drew got on the phone. Drew is so shy and quiet, but got off the phone talking about how nice the teacher is. Wolfie has not spoken on the phone with any of his teachers yet, but I don't believe its because they haven't called. We had a new line installed for the kids and school, and from the caller ID, it looks like we've gotten several calls from the school. I believe Wolfie just needs to recognize the incoming caller and get up the nerve to answer the phone. I'll also have to put dad on alert.

We also finished up the LEAP tests (Math & Reading). They both did fine. Drew had a hard time guessing at the ones she did not know (as we were instructed). Her thought was she simply HAD to get them all correct, and it just did NOT make sense to her to guess at the ones she did not know (even though I told her that's the way the test was going to go, and that's the way we were supposed to do it). Poor baby, really almost ended up in tears over it. It also appears that Wolfie is a really good guesser. He got quite a few correct that he had to guess at the answers. (Consequently, the instructions to guess confuse me because if the test is to see what the kids know and what they need to learn, then shouldn't they just leave the ones they don't know blank?)

I really wanted to take the kids swimming at my mothers this weekend, but it rained (maybe one day during the week). Otherwise, a pretty lazy weekend - that's okay too, we'll be ready for Monday.

First (Official) Day of School

Well, let me back up in time about 7 or 8 years, back when all of my kids were young and living at home (I have five kids in all - his, hers, & ours), and I - for the sake of sanity - put together a "Consequences & Actions" chart. It was wonderful. The kids knew what to expect, and understood the consequences for certain actions (it was no longer a punishment just because I was at the end of my rope - it was just, simply, the rules of the household), and it was magical. More importantly, it saved my sanity and their bottoms. But you know, the difficult part was not getting the kids on the program, it was getting ME on the program.

As I wrapped things up for today (the first day of schooling at home), I'm seeing a parallel, as it is painfully apparent that me and the husband (Roy) have a LOT to learn! It was also very apparent that the kids are going to slide into the swing of this thing with ease. They both did very, very well today. It was great, and I was really proud of them! I will not be taking Monday off and I wanted them to get a taste of their projects so they could know what to expect, and maybe get a little headstart.

Wolfie started with History and he went through it easily with very few questions. After he finished the assessment we realized that we would not be able to submit the projects until the first day of school. That's okay. He can fly through these assignments on Monday, submit them, and move on to the others. He also chose to go through his math assignment (struggled a little more there, I am supposing because it's been a while since he's done math work). He also tends to be insecure and hesitant to commit to his answers. We talked about it, but I believe this will be one of his longterm challenges (it's his momma's side showing).

Drew began with her Language Arts. There was quite a bit of work, including several different reading assignments, worksheets, and vocabulary. Consequently, this was all she concentrated on. Overall she did well, but did get a little nervous and worried about it being too hard. I reassured her that we would all be learning new things and it was okay to focus on those answers she knew first, leaving the harder questions for last.

We worked for only two hours and then it was obvious they needed a break, so we called it a day.

After they wrapped it up, they both walked away feeling reassured about what to expect on Monday.

As I will be keeping my day job, their dad will be home to help them as needed during the day, and I will help them when I get home from work. We expect them to be fairly needy for a while, growing more comfortable and working more independently as the year progresses.

Completed study areas

The kids have their schedules as well. Each assigned your typical classes (Math, English, Science, Social Studies, PE, Computer Learning, and Art) spread throughout the week, but without specific time allotments (although their live sessions will be time specific). Live sessions are classes held via webcam. Their teacher can be viewed (live) on the computer screen (in one corner) with another portion of the screen showing the "board" the teacher is writing on. It is held with other children logged in and everyone is able to communicate together. It also has an area portioned for the child to type in comments and questions, and also includes shortcut keys for the child to select so that he/she can communicate (silently) to the teacher about "stepping away" from the desk, or "raising hand", or "slow down please", and so on.

Drew is nervous, I think because of the live sessions. I don't believe she realizes yet that those don't occur everyday. Maybe I see about getting a little time off or moving my lunch around so that I can help her with her first live session. Additionally, we will begin our lessons tomorrow (Sunday). School officially begins this Monday, but I'm not taking Monday off (as I usually did with the BM (bricks & mortar) schools. This will allow her to ease into her lessons and a schedule, knowing a little more about what to expect.

I beleve the hardest part will be their schedules. They are used to waking up and flipping on the cartoons. New schedule does not allow for the television to be on during school time. It was held in a pavilion in the park. Unfortunately, it rained, hard. As you see in the photo above, we piled under the shelter, shoulder to shoulder. What impressed me most was, while everyone was drenched from either the rain or the humidity, everyone was still in good spirits. The faculity did an excellent job of making the best of a soggy situation, and I'm glad we went. We're winding up this year and already I can't wait to get started on this program.

I informed the attorney I work for about our plans. Sort of informed her accidently though. She was surprised but supportive.

Yesterday I was dropping my son off at his middle school and there in front were five elderly men protesting abortion.

Whatever your position is on this topic, and whatever my position, I totally had a problem with this protest.

Two of the men had large 4 foot by 4 foot posters, in color. The first was of an aborted baby with the guts torn apart, and the second was of an aborted baby torn to pieces. It was horrible. And more, these men were displaying these photos at the entrance to the drive thru of the school. I suppose even if they had been at the exit of the drive thru, AFTER the children were dropped off, I would still have the same issue.

I approached one of the men and said, "my son attends school here and I don't want him seeing these horrible pictures." He turned to me and said, "talk to him about it."

Well, how about I talk to him about it when I feel the time is right - not you!

Today,

I was sick and I had to take some gross medicine and

I ate Popeyes and ice cream and played with

my toy puppy, Snuggles.

(I have promised my kids they could post to this blog on occassion. It is my youngest son's "graduation" from 6th grade and my daughter's "graduation" from 2nd grade, and the beginning of our education at home. Oh, these aren't my only two children. We are a family of seven all together. A quick introduction of my blended and multiracial (Caucasian and Hispanic) family: my husband, Roy; my "first" stepson, Jr.; my "first" son, Aaron; my "second" stepson, Corey; my "second" son, Wolfie; and my daughter, Drew. Oh, and of course, myself. Hi, I'm Karen. My two oldest children have graduated and the third eldest is graduating this year, and all did very well in public school, with very few "issues". Unfortunately, our school district is going through many of its own major transformations of which I have been very unhappy, but that is not what this blog is about.

I've decided to blog about our homeschooling experience because it is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make. It is also one that I don't expect to receive a lot of support or enthusiasm from my extended family, simply because they love my children as well and share a concern for their wellbeing too, so I acknowledge their desire to be kept informed on our homeschooling developments. And as opposed to going through my rationale and daily events over and over with each of them, well, with this blog they can peek into our lives and gain the latest on our homeschooling news. Hopefully, it will offer them (and me) some relief as well. Don't get me wrong, I realize it's going to be full of ups and downs, good days and bad, productive days and not so productive days, doubts and confirmations, but I also feel that sticking it out is going to be half the battle. I believe kids crave information and education; I know mine do. They really amaze me with their brilliance.

I would also like to share that I am a huge self-doubter, so I cannot even begin to express the worries and what-ifs I have entertained. The last thing, the worst thing, would be that I make this transition only to realize that I have done a disservice to my children. I am sure every homeschooling parent has felt the same worries. And I am sure it comes with the territory. I mean, what-if this turns out to be too much responsibility for me and my children. What-if my children do not do well with this program. What-if we decide to re-enroll them in public school later, only to find out that they have fallen far behind. But then, I don't believe that setting a "d-day" of six months (or whatever) to decide whether to continue homeschooling or to return to public school is realistic either. I believe there will be a period of adjustment, for all of us, getting set-up, becoming accustomed to a new schedule and understanding how the program works. And maybe, we will be doing our studies year-around for a while, taking time off only here and there for family vacations. I also believe that part of the homeschooling experience is that the child progresses at his/her own pace, and could wound up graduating earlier or later than expected. You see, as easily as I can worry myself out of something, I can also rationalize myself back into it.

I first began checking into homeschooling about a year ago and found a plethora of programs and resources, and I have chosen, what I believe is, a fantastic program for our family. It was introduced to me by a friend already using it with her own children, and doing so very successfully. It is a "satellite school" which means we are enrolled in a full school program with some of the work done in books mailed back and forth, and other work done via the internet. They have staff and teachers available to help us with questions or concerns. They offer all the basics as well as a wide variety of elective classes.

Although enrollment doesn't begin until later, I decided to start blogging immediately because in essence, this is when the commitment to homeschool begins. With the research, discovery, rationale, and planning, and I wanted (you) to get in on this journey at the very inception.

Drew is very excited about homeschooling and I constantly find myself talking her into finishing out this year in public school. Wolfie, too, is excited with his main concern being his social life; so we are preparing him for that by ensuring him that he may continue to spend time with his friends.
